Winter is definitely arriving!!
With our thermals on and hot drinks down us, we set out on patrol. The cold is definitely one of the more worrying things at this time of year. Once people who have consumed a lot of alcohol sit down on the pavement, they get very cold, very quickly.
On Friday we met 2 females doing just this, and even though we wrapped them in foil ‘space blankets’ they were shivering and starting to seize up. We were able to help them stand & walk to a nearby safe space – at the British Transport Police Office. There we were able to wrap them in more blankets and at least sit inside with them. They eventually sobered up and were able to get a train home.
Good partnership working – well done teams!
Our intrepid Angels were out again on Friday night and it was office Christmas party time. These revellers are not so experienced in the night scene, and were surprisingly ready to be helped into a taxi and home for a cup of cocoa.
Others, though, unable to hold up under the alcohol, became aggressive … it’s strange when there’s a scuffle how lads suddenly converge from almost nowhere, but it’s mostly pushing and shoving. The role here for the Angels is not to get involved but to stand by looking authoritative. This is often enough to calm things down.
Lots of people in town on Friday night after Kaiser Chiefs – but not the riot some predicted (sorry….!).
It was a good night & we spent time with visitors from Manchester, Liverpool & Scotland – It’s great to be able to welcome people to our lovely city! We worked hard to get a young man off the road, to get a very distressed lady safely into a taxi, and to help find someone who was upset and who had run away. We thank God for wonderful volunteers and to be able to work with agencies like the ambulance & the police.
After some fantastic training covering personal safety & awareness, we headed out into the night!
Although town didn’t feel very busy, there was some kind of an ‘edge’ to it – and soon we were helping individuals sober up enough to get them into taxis. Something that always strikes me – is that people so often end up on their own – in a state where they can’t help themselves. When you’re out and about – STICK TOGETHER! We had some great new volunteers, and finished the night about 3.15am…we were ready for bed!’
